Adding or removing seats by uploading a CSV file

This article describes how to add SaaS Protection to seats or remove SaaS Protection from seats by uploading a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

A CSV file is a text file used to upload multiple records to a service. Each row in the file is a data record that includes one field. Each row must end with a line break.

CSV file requirements and upload procedures vary by service seat type and whether you are using Seat Management version 1.0 or 2.0. To check your seat management version, see Which Seat Management version is my organization using?. Then proceed to Seat Management 1.0 or Seat Management 2.0 below.

All M365 organizations use Seat Management 2.0.

A Google Workspace organization may be using version 1.0 or version 2.0. To check the version:

  1. On the SaaS Protection Status page, click the desired organization.
  2. Select Seat Management to view the menu options:
  • If you see only Users in the drop-down, the organization is using version 1.0.
  • If you see both Users and Shared Drives in the drop-down, the organization is using version 2.0.

In Seat Management 1.0, you can upload a CSV file of users to quickly add SaaS Protection to multiple seats. Start by creating the CSV file as described in CSV file requirements for Seat Management 1.0. Then upload the file as described in To upload a CSV file for Seat Management 1.0.

NOTE  You cannot remove SaaS Protection from seats or change seat status in Seat Management 1.0.

The following are requirements for creating the CSV file:

  • It is recommended that you limit CSV files to 500 records. You can add additional records in another upload.
  • A header containing the word email must be present in Row 1, Column 1.
  • Column 1 must only contain the header and email addresses.
  • The data rows below the header must contain lowercase email addresses in Column 1. Datto SaaS Protection will automatically skip records that do not require a status change (e.g., the seat is already in Protected status).
  • All email domains must match that of the target Google Workspace domain.

Use this procedure to add SaaS Protection to users by uploading a CSV file.

  1. Create the CSV file.
  2. On the SaaS Protection Status page, click the desired organization.
  3. Select Seat Management > Users.
  4. Click Add Users.
  5. Click the Upload CSV tab.
  6. Click Choose File.
  7. Navigate to and select the CSV file.
  8. Click Save.

In Seat Management 2.0, you can upload a CSV file of users or shared drives to quickly add SaaS Protection to multiple seats or remove SaaS Protection from multiple seats. Start by creating the CSV file as described in CSV file requirements for Seat Management 2.0. Then upload the file as described in Protecting or unprotecting multiple seats in Seat Management 2.0.

The following are requirements for creating a CSV file:

  • A single CSV file must contain one service seat type only (e.g., only users or only shared drives). You must create a separate file for each seat type.
  • It is recommended that you limit CSV files to 500 records. You can add additional records in another upload.
  • A header row must not be present.
  • Column 1 must contain only email addresses (to add users) or remote identifiers (to add shared drives; see Shared drives CSV file below). The emails or remote identifiers in the CSV file are case sensitive and must exactly match what is displayed on the Seat Management page. Any records that do not match exactly will be skipped during the upload.

EXAMPLE  Enter hannaCHAN@backupify4.onmicrosoft.com to add the user shown here:

  • All email domains must match that of the target Google Workspace domain.
  • During the upload, Datto SaaS Protection will automatically skip records that do not require a status change (e.g., the seat is already in the desired Protected or Unprotected status).
  • Shared drives CSV file

In Google Workspace Seat Management 2.0, uploading a list of shared drives requires that a remote ID is appended to the email address of each shared drive in the CSV file. A remote ID is a unique identifier associated with a shared drive. In the CSV file, the email address and remote ID must be separated by a colon. For example, name@testsite.com:remoteid. The remote ID can be found on the Seat Management > Shared Drives page.

Use these steps to add protection to or remove protection from multiple seats by uploading a CSV file.

  1. Create a CSV file that includes all clients you'd like to manage. For each client, be sure to include the details described in CSV file requirements for Seat Management 2.0.
  2. On the SaaS Protection Status page, click the desired organization.
  3. From the Seat Management menu, select the applicable Seat Management page.
  4. In the upper-right corner of the Manage section, click .
  5. Select Import CSV.
  6. In the Import CSV dialog box, click Choose File.
  7. Navigate to and select the applicable CSV file.
  8. To protect all seats that are being uploaded via the CSV file, leave Protect selected in the Action section of the Import CSV modal. To unprotect all seats in the file, select Unprotect.
  9. Click Import CSV.
