Enabling the People API for Contacts

This article describes the process of enabling the People API in Google Workspace to allow for Contacts backups in Datto SaaS Protection for Google Workspace.

Datto SaaS Protection organizations created after November 17th, 2021 will already have this access enabled and do not need to make any changes for Contacts backups.

Environment

  • Datto SaaS Protection for Google Workspace
  • Google Admin portal

Description

In order for Contacts backups to run in Datto SaaS Protection for Google Workspace, Datto must be granted two additional scopes for Google’s People API in the Google Workspace Admin Portal. The steps to enable this setting are as follows.

  1. Login to the Google Admin portal using a Super Admin.
  2. Select Apps→ Google Workspace Marketplace apps→ Apps list→ Backupify Google Apps Backup.
  3. Click the OAuth Scopes tab
  4. Expand Contacts
  5. Make sure that access is granted for the following scopes.
    • See, edit, download and permanently delete your contacts
      (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts)
    • See and download contact info automatically save in your "Other contacts"
      (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts.other.readonly)

What to expect from these changes

After these changes are completed you will see changes in the backup cycles moving forward. Snapshots taken after the People API is granted access will store your Contacts in the folder My Contacts and the Contacts folder will be empty. Snapshots taken before the access is granted will remain unchanged and the Contacts will be stored in the Contacts folder
