Understanding backup retention
The length of time that backups are retained varies by subscription type. This article describes how backup retention works for each type of Datto SaaS Protection subscription.
NOTE To check which subscription type you have, see Checking your subscription type.
Retention refers to the length of time the client's backed-up data is stored in the Kaseya cloud before it is removed. SaaS Protection provides Infinite cloud retention (ICR), where backup snapshots are retained in the Kaseya cloud for the retention period you select and:
- up to three daily backups are taken of each end user's service data and retained for 30 days.
- one of the daily backups is retained for 90 days.
- after 90 days, one weekly backup is retained for 90 days, then retained on a rolling basis for up to one year.
- after one year, one monthly backup is retained for one year, after which each is stored for the selected retention period.
The following daily, weekly, and monthly backups are retained:
- Daily backup: the last backup of the day is retained.
- Weekly backup: the last backup on Sunday is retained.
- Monthly backup: the last backup on the last Sunday of the month is retained.
Paused or archived users
If a user's seat status is Paused or Archived, backups are retained as described above during the retention period. Post retention period, the last backup snapshot is retained as long as the user remains licensed with a Paused or Archived seat.

- After 90 days, one weekly backup is retained for 90 days, then retained on a rolling basis for up to one year.
- Infinite cloud retention (ICR): Backup snapshots are retained in the Kaseya cloud for the retention period you select. The ICR retention type retains data until the subscription is canceled.
